Species identification (PCR and sequencing on one well isolated colony)

If you do have contaminants or a wild yeast you’ve caught, this service can be used to identify the species relatively quickly (2-5 day turnaround) via PCR and DNA sequencing (using primers specific to the 16S rDNA region for bacteria and ITS region for fungal/yeast samples).  We just need at least one well isolated colony on an agar plate (sequencing 2-3 colonies with similar morphology/appearance to ensure that all are identical is recommended).  After we receive the sequencing data, it will be compared against a database (via BLAST) for a best species match results.  Sometimes only the genus (e.g. Lactobacillus sp.) can be identified, but most of the time sequencing can identify the exact species (e.g. Lactobacillus brevis).  PCR and sequencing data are given upon request.
